We need a “Good Friday Agreement” for Irish Health Services to stop the carnage as the death toll exceeds 3,500 in our hospital Emergency Departments and scandals such as the Cervical Check add to the dangers, trauma and mistreatment of the sick and vulnerable.
‘It is important’, according to Michael Noonan, ‘that in the discourse of the appropriate amount of tax and spend in our economy, the views of those who contribute the majority of the taxation are heard’. Who are these people who ‘contribute the majority of the taxation’? Isn’t that just ‘us’? Are Noonan’s ‘majority contributors’ in any way related to the ‘people who get up early in the morning’? Because, despite Leo Varadkar’s insistence that he was being inclusive when he said that, both of these phrases are dog-whistles to the ‘respectable’ middle and professional classes, who are apparently wearied by the burden of carrying the rest of us.
